DreamShaper XL Lightning Features: What the Latest Focus Offers

DreamShaper XL Lightning is the few-step focus of the DreamShaper XL line on public download pages today.

The author (Lykon) also published Turbo few-step builds earlier. On the main Civitai model page, guidance pushes people toward Turbo or Lightning instead of older Alpha2.

This guide explains the latest focus in plain language. It only uses public model-card and model-page facts.

What Lightning is for

Lightning is for speed.

You load a Lightning (or Turbo-Lightning) checkpoint, use low CFG, and run only a few steps. That is different from older full-quality alpha settings that used higher CFG and more steps.

Public HF examples for Lightning-style runs often show about 4 steps and guidance_scale=2.

Recommended sampling for Lightning

From author-facing / card tips:

Main settings

  • CFG / guidance: about 2
  • Steps: about 3–6
  • Sampler: DPM++ SDE Karras (or Normal)
  • First pass size: do not push one side far above 1024 on the first pass

Extra notes

  • Lightning can still be used with highres fix and tiled upscaling
  • When you train or fine-tune on top of Lightning, public advice is to keep sampler / steps / CFG aligned with how the base expects to run

If a result looks washed out or noisy, check that you did not use high-step “full model” settings on a Lightning file (or the reverse).

Recommended sampling for Turbo

Turbo is the other modern few-step path.

Public tips typically say:

  • CFG about 2
  • about 4–8 steps
  • sampler DPM++ SDE Karras (not 2M)
  • LCM may work but is not encouraged if you care more about quality than raw speed

Optional “non-Turbo style” (Turbo only)

Author notes say you can also run Turbo like a non-Turbo checkpoint:

  • samplers such as DPM++ 2M SDE Karras or Euler
  • CFG about 6
  • about 20–40 steps

Public notes say do not treat Lightning the same way for that “non-Turbo style” path.

HF Turbo-style examples often show about 6 steps and guidance_scale=2.

Files and names you may see

Names can differ slightly between Civitai and Hugging Face. Public examples include:

  • DreamShaperXL_Turbo-Lightning.safetensors (Civitai Lightning packaging, ~6.46 GB fp16 class)
  • DreamShaperXL_Lightning.safetensors
  • DreamShaperXL_Lightning-SFW.safetensors

Always download from the official Lykon / Civitai listing you trust, and match the version description to the settings above.

License and commercial notes

Base openrail++ / Open RAIL++-M

Main DreamShaper XL cards list CreativeML Open RAIL++-M / openrail++. That license allows many uses under conditions (including restrictions in Attachment A). Read the full text before commercial projects.

Turbo commercial caution

Author text on the model page says Turbo currently cannot be used commercially unless you get permission from Stability AI. Treat that as a separate warning from the base openrail++ label. Re-check the live page before shipping a product.
