DreamShaper XL Explained: Features, History, and What Comes Next
DreamShaper XL is an AI checkpoint that turns text into pictures.
It is built on Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL). You write a prompt. The model tries to draw what you asked for.
This article answers three easy questions:
- What is special about DreamShaper XL?
- How did it grow over time?
- What might happen next?
We only use facts from public model pages (Civitai and Hugging Face). We do not invent a secret roadmap.
What is DreamShaper XL?
Think of DreamShaper XL as a drawing student that practiced on many kinds of pictures, not only one style.

Features: what makes DreamShaper XL special?
1. It aims to be a generalist
Public pages present DreamShaper XL as a multi-style model. That is different from models that only chase photoreal faces or only chase anime.
2. Author-claimed improvements over base SDXL 1.0
On the public model page, Lykon lists advantages versus stock SDXL 1.0, including:
- people often look better
- edges look less soft / blurry
- NSFW quality can be stronger
- you often do not need a separate refiner if you use highres fix or upscale + img2img
- a playful note that “dragons” are better (humor, not a lab scoreboard)
These are author claims from public product copy. They are not independent lab benchmarks.
3. Full builds and few-step builds
The family includes:
- early alpha checkpoints (0.9 and 1.0 era)
- Turbo few-step builds
- Lightning DPM++ SDE few-step builds (current focus on the main Civitai page)
4. Training notes that are public (not a full secret recipe)
For alpha2 (xl1.0), public notes say it is a trained checkpoint, not a random multi-merge soup:
- UNet and text encoders start from SDXL 1.0
- finetuned on about 10% of DreamShaper 7 data
- uses the XL 0.9 VAE (author prefers it over the XL 1.0 VAE)
Full private data lists and every training step are not published as one open recipe.
5. Easy public downloads

History: how versions grew
Here is a simple timeline from public sources.
Alpha1 — SDXL 0.9 era
Early public test on SDXL 0.9. Older workflow notes sometimes generated with DreamShaper XL, then polished with AbsoluteReality or DreamShaper 7 highres fix.
Alpha2 (xl1.0)
The SDXL 1.0 finetune described above. It was the “full quality” style checkpoint before few-step builds took center stage.
Turbo
A few-step line. Public tips often use:
- CFG around 2
- about 4–8 steps
- DPM++ SDE Karras (not 2M)
The author also says Turbo can be run in a “non-Turbo” way (higher steps / different samplers). Lightning should not be forced into that non-Turbo style the same way.
Commercial note (author text): Turbo currently should not be used commercially unless you have permission from Stability AI. Always re-read the current model page and Stability rules before commercial work.
Lightning DPM++ SDE — around 2024-02-21
Public pages highlight Lightning DPM++ SDE as a main download (file names such as DreamShaperXL_Turbo-Lightning.safetensors / Lightning weights on HF). There is also an SFW Lightning variant on distribution pages.
Author guidance on the model page pushes people to use Turbo or Lightning instead of older Alpha2 for new work.
Important honesty check: public main sources do not publish a full product roadmap (no named next major version, no architecture migration plan, no fixed feature list for “V-next”).
Future: what public sources actually say
This part must stay honest.
What we know
- The public Civitai page currently steers users toward Lightning / Turbo.
- Hugging Face hosts weight mirrors for 1.0, Turbo, and Lightning.
- We did not find an official public roadmap that promises a dated next major DreamShaper XL release.
What we should not invent
We will not claim:
- a secret “DreamShaper XL 2.0 on date X”
- official scoreboards vs Midjourney / DALL·E (the author positions the model as generalist inspiration, not as a certified win table)
- that every historical Turbo file name (including community “v2.1” labels) is still the default download chip on Civitai today
Safe takeaway: for production work today, treat Lightning (or Turbo if you need that line) as the author’s preferred modern path, and re-check Civitai model 112902 plus the Lykon HF repos before major projects.
